National Institute of Opthalmology & Hospital

National Institute of Ophthalmology as” Health Bulletin". The National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital is the largest institute of ophthalmology in the country. It was established in 1978 and expanded to 250 beds in 2006. The service serves as an academic institution for postgraduate study in ophthalmology and amology, a tertiary service for the hospital for managing and ocular diseases.  The institute's director is also the line director of “National Eye Care” and works to implement a national blindness program throughout the country.  This is a teaching institute, and young medical graduates are trained here in different courses (MS, FCPS, DO, etc.). There are 10 sub-specialty departments in the institute, e.g., cataract, ophthalmology, cornea, glaucoma, vitreoretinal, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, community ophthalmology, oculoplastics, and low vision services. Equipped with modern investigation tools, equipment, and trained human resources, the institute serves as the center of excellence in eye care in Bangladesh, and hopefully, it will become one of the best centers in this region in the near future. The prevention of blindness program in Bangladesh, “National Eye Care,” is also one of our major programs. Under NEC, we have trained ophthalmologists of district hospitals on SICS, pediatric eye care, and retinal diseases; continuous training of the nurses and PEC workers is held; and CME programs are undertaken. Regular outreach camps are arranged to reach the underserved and unreached marginalized populations. With quality eye care service, appropriate planning of eye care, and the development of a new generation of skilled, dedicated manpower, we hope to achieve the Vision 2020 goal by 2020.
