Armed Forces Institute of Pathology
Opposite Radisson Blu, Beside Kurmitola General Hospital, Dhaka-1206
To keep up with the global advancement of medical science, the nation's medical education has been evolving continuously. The Bangladesh Armed Forces recognized the need for a group of young people who are enthusiastic, driven, and committed to leading the health sector in the twenty-first century. The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) was founded with this idea in mind in order to address the global developments occurring in medical education and technology.
In both times of war and peace, the Army Medical Corps (AMC) is responsible for maintaining the fighting capability of the Armed Forces through efficient health care delivery. Every year, a sizable number of doctors must be inducted into the AMC. It has been noted that recently graduating physicians from the current medical schools are occasionally unable to satisfy the unique standards of the Armed Forces. Therefore, in order to meet the demand for medical graduates who are both militarily motivated and of higher academic caliber for induction into the Armed Forces as well as to supply a sizeable number of highly disciplined and qualified physicians for the national health care service, the government decided to establish the AFMC.
On June 20, 1999, 56 medical cadets were inducted into the Armed Forces Medical College, kicking off its academic operations. The college is accredited by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) and associated with the Bangladesh University of Professionals. A total of 1940 students have been enrolled in 22 batches thus far. The 16th batch of students has finished their internship program at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka, and the graduates of the first 17 batches are now doctors. Already enrolled in the Bangladesh Army are 440 doctors. The remaining batches are moving along according to the academic calendar. According to the government decree published in AFMC Instruction -1/2003, admission is based on merit.
