Dhaka Medical College
Secretariat Rd, Dhaka-1000
Dhaka Medical College is a medical college and hospital located in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. It is located in the city's Bakshibazar neighborhood, adjacent to the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and the University of Dhaka.
Dhaka Medical College began its journey on July 10th, 1946, and launched a new era in Bangladeshi medical education. The British Government was first approached with the notion of establishing a medical college in Dhaka in 1939, but World War II prevented it from being implemented. A committee was established after the war in 1945, and on the committee's advice, Dhaka Medical College began its illustrious journey on July 10, 1946.
The current hospital building was constructed prior to the partition of Bengal in 1905; the college did not initially have a facility of its own. It served as the secretariat for East Bengal's and Assam's newly created provinces. It became a component of the University of Dhaka in 1921. The medical center building was converted into an American military hospital during World War II. After the war, the Americans left the structure, and in 1946, the journey actually began. The first dean was Major W. J. Virgin, who served as the chairman of the committee established to build the Dhaka Medical College.
