On January 12, 1971, its native adjudicator, Rear Admiral S.M. Ahsan, Governor of Upper East Pakistan, officially launched it. The Jahangirnagar University Act of 1973, which abolished the earlier authorization and renamed the university Jahangirnagar University, was approved by the government after Bangladesh's independence.
