Notre Dame College
Motijheel Circular Road, Arambagh, Motijheel, Dhaka
In November 1949, Notre Dame College opened its doors in Laxmibazar, Dhaka. Due to the then-current difficulty in the education sector of the newly-born East Pakistan, it was founded by Roman Catholic priests from the Congregation of Holy Cross. As the Archbishop of Dhaka and head of the Catholic Church in East Pakistan, Archbishop Graner, CSC, invited the Congregation of the Holy Cross Priest Society to establish and run a college in this new nation. The congregation also established the St. Gregory School, which was originally known as St. Gregory College. In 1954, it changed its name to Notre Dame College and moved to Motijheel, where it is now. Additionally, the University of Notre Dame, Portland University, Kings and Stonehill College, and the Congregation of Holy Cross are also American institutions. The new name was a tribute to the University of Notre Dame, which many of the faculty members attended as undergraduates. Notre Dame, which is French for "Our Lady," refers to Mother Mary.
The college's founders' two main goals have always been to educate Christian students at the college level and to educate students with a quality and value-based education so they can contribute to the advancement of this nation. According to the principles of social justice, extra attention should be provided to students who would otherwise not have the chance to get such a high-quality education that is founded on moral principles because of their socioeconomic circumstances, ethnic background, location in a rural area, or other socially disadvantaged circumstances. The goal of education is to instill in students a love of God, their nation, and knowledge. The development of characters is stressed.
People think of Notre Dame College as a family. The Notre Dame Family is made up of all the faculty, employees, and administrators, both teaching and non-teaching. The foundation of Notre Dame family life is love, respect, duty sharing, and a shared concern for the holistic development of the students. Everyone at this place does their job honestly, competently, and compassionately, adding a special depth to the Notre Dame Family. Notre Dame College's brilliance is not limited to its stellar exam performance; it also stems from the opportunities it provides to underprivileged, tribal, and underprivileged students from all across the nation.
The Bangladeshi government does not currently provide any financial assistance to the college. The tuition fees paid by students serve as its sole source of funding.
