As required by the "Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Act 2001," the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University officially began operations on September 11, 2001, following the issue of a notification by the government. The Chief Minister of Bengal at the time, Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq, founded the Bengal Agricultural Institute (BAI) on December 11, 1938. Originally known as "The Bengal Agricultural Institute," this institution's name was changed to "East Pakistan Agricultural Institute" in 1947. The institute's name was inadvertently changed to the Bangladesh Agricultural Institute (BAI) when Bangladesh gained independence in 1971. The BAI has been operating as a "Faculty of Agriculture" under Dhaka University ever since it was founded in 1938. While this was happening, the academic role of the university was transferred to Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh in 1964 and remained there till it was upgraded to Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in 2001.

The Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University has so far produced 600 postgraduates and close to 5700 graduates. Graduates of this university have been instrumental in the growth of the nation's agriculture system and agro-based economy. They participate in a range of domestic and foreign activities, from the civil service to UN jobs like serving in UN peacekeeping operations. This university currently enrolls over 2500 undergraduate and graduate students, who are taught by knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced faculty.
